Hardware installation

Author used the medium configuration with the following components:

  • Dual CPU with 2 cores AMD 270
  • 4 x 300GB SCSI storage configured in RAID-5 mode.
  • Dell Powervault 136-T tape library with 60 tapes loaded (expandable up to 72 tapes)
  • Two LTO-2 tape drives installed into the tape library.
Total capacity with 60 tapes loaded is about 12TB which is enough to backup about 8TB of data, including incremental and full backups.

Hardware installation includes two steps: connecting tape drives with server and installing tapes into library.

Connecting tape drives

You should connect tape drives to each other. If you have 2 tape drivers, you will need 3 SCSI cables and one SCSI terminator. Connecting steps are explained below:

  • Connect 1st connector of tape exchanger controller to SCSI port of your backup server.
  • 2nd connector of tape exchange should go to 1st connector of 1st tape drive
  • 2nd connector of 1st tape drive should go to 1st connector of 2nd drive.
  • 2nd connector of 2nd tape drive should be terminated by a SCSI terminator.

Connections' structure is shown below:
